RIDER - Effective SL is equal to the sum of SL and the mount's obedience skill, plus one for a light (English) saddle or two for a full (western) saddle, minus one per hand or leg not being used to control the mount. This skill level is used to handle various tasks. Riding on a good road at a walk requires a SL of 1; at a trot, of 3; at a gallop, of 2. Riding on open plains or on a forest trail requires an additional SL per full 12" of speed; an additional SL is also required for each EN point expended by the rider in a round.

In forest or rough terrain, a SL is required per full 6" of speed; in woods or broken terrain, per 4"; through water, per 1"; on a little used road or open straight trail, per 24". Jumping requires a SL per 3" horizontal jump distance or 1" maximum vertical drop during the round.

When astride a mount, the facing direction of the rider must match that of the mount. When riding sidesaddle, the facing direction of the rider must be in one of the mount's side arcs instead - between 45 degrees and 135 degrees from the facing of the mount - and the leg that would normally be on the other side is considered not being used to control the mount.
